mix it … summertime sipper

Today I thought that I would share the first of a series of post that Katie and I worked on for the Trohv blog. A few weekends ago we put together an impromptu brunch and are sharing snippets over the next few weeks. We started, of course, with the cocktail. Full of fresh berries, and flavors of spring this is the perfect summertime sipper. I also love this cocktail because it is easily made without alcohol so no one has to miss out. For the recipe and full post hop on over to the Trohv blog. Enjoy!!

mix it … old fashioned

So finally on Sunday, after months of waiting, Mad Men premiered for its fifth season. Did you watch? We did. What did you think? I am still digesting everything, and think that I might go back and re-watch it but in general I’m excited for the season. Monday’s Fresh Air was completely dedicated to Matthew Weiner, the creator of Man Men. The show gave some insight into the plot and character choices that were made. If you have not already heard it you might want to take a listen.

In honor of the show my husband, sometimes we call him Mr. Awesome, made Old Fashioned cocktails for all of us. They were perfect!

Mr. Awesome’s Old Fashioned

orange | maraschino cherries | bourbon  | water

ice |lemon | sugar cubes | orange bitters

place one sugar cube  in a rocks glass

+ add +

3 dashes of orange bitters  – 1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice   1 teaspoon water

use your muddler and crush up the sugar cube until it is dissolved

+ add +

a section of the orange & one cherry – muddle these with the sugar mixture

+ add +

2.5oz bourbon & continue to muddle

+ add +

 ice to fill the glass

cut a tick piece of lemon rind – twist it to release the oils and rim the glass  - drop it into the cocktail

a good Old Fashioned should take no less than 3 minutes to make

These are one of my favorite drinks. I highly suggest you try one out if you are not already a fan. Cheers!

mix it … grapefruit cocktail

As promised, a week late, but better than never the cocktail recipe from our day of The OC. I have recently fallen deeply in love with tequila and can’t get enough of it. So any drink that I can concoct that is easy, fresh and yummy I am over the moon about. The cocktail is based off of a Ruby Red Tequila Cocktail from Everyday Food. I have chosen to dial it up a touch. Both versions are good, mine is a bit more to the point.

8oz tequila

juice of one lime

2 cups of grapefruit juice, not cocktail, to much sugar

Mix all ingredients in a pitcher. Pour into rocks glass full of ice. Enjoy!

mix it … gin fizz

This week was one of my favorite weeks of the year. I traveled to New York for the International Gift show at the Javits center, and saw oh so many amazing things. There were so many great items that I am super excited about and can’t wait to begin receiving in the store. One of my favorites is the perfume line by Lubin of France. Most of the fragrances are unisex which I love! The scents might be a bit unusual, or have a different profile than most Americans are used to but I think that they are a fabulous departure from the expected.

I will immediately be picking up Gin Fizz. Originally made in 1955 for Grace Kelly the fragrance is fresh and named for the then popular Gin Fizz drink. Below is the drink that inspired the fragrance.

Hendricks Gin, Superfine Sugar, Lemon, Lime, Ice, Fever Tree Club Soda, Highball Glass
