spring weekends

Since we moved into our house three years ago I have been focusing most of my energy on the interior. This year I decided that I was tired of having a disastrous front and back yard, and I was going to do something about it. So out came the shovel and to work I went. Here are a few quick shots of what I accomplished thus far.

Our postal carrier walks across all of our yards each day, and many of the neighbors have put out little pathways. As I was deciding what to do with the yard I knew that a path was a priority. The rocks were salvaged from the back yard, and rolled around the block in a wheelbarrow. I have since finished the path, it only took me a few hours to dig the dirt, lay the stones, and fill dirt back in around them. I also managed to transplant some peonies and lilies of the valley from the back to the front. Thus far everyone is still alive and thriving. Fingers crossed.

I am still trying to figure out what to do with the rest of the yard, it is all dirt at the moment. We do not want grass so I am on the hunt for a good ground cover that will not harbor rodents looking for a cozy home. Any suggestions?

The lower portion of our yard is just a small bed alongside the sidewalk. When we moved in there was a mound of dirt that went about a third of the way up the wall. I spent a long day last summer tossing most of it up and over the wall into the main yard. There was still a little bit to be done this year.  Once that was finished, I laid a nice stone border to try and keep the dirt and mulch in its proper area. Again, the stones were all gathered from out front and back yard. I plan on planting some hostas here later this spring. So that is what I have been up to in my yard. What have you been doing?

kitchen dreaming

Just over three years ago we bought our first home, a 1927 row home in Baltimore city. Built using gorgeous stone from a nearby quarry we have a ton of original detail left in the house. Inlaid wood floors, a great sun room off the front of the house, and original black and white tile in the bathroom. This being said it is not old and stuffy. We actually have a rather open floor plan on the first floor with the exception of the kitchen.

There has always been a plan to take down the wall between the kitchen and dining room but we have not gotten around to it yet. I am hoping that it will happen this year and have started in on my plans. I am on the hunt for the perfect vintage, or industrial piece for the island that will serve as a work surface and counter seating for a few people. I plan on topping the piece with butchers block to give it a good working surface.

Who knows what I will end up doing, but for this week I am dreaming of these things! Our everyday glasses are the thick jar like ones shown below. I have used them for years now and love them due to their durability and industrial feel. I have been thinking about painting the kitchen walls green chalkboard since I saw this on pinterest months ago.

Do you plan out rooms in your house, or just let them develop naturally?

Oh Friday you are finally here. I wanted to spend the day cozied up in bed with lots of down pillows, and a super soft comforter. Alas, there are things to be done.

warm days + cool nights

One of my favorite parts of the spring are the warm days and cool nights. There is nothing better than feeling warm and sun sunkissed during the day and snuggling up with a great blanket by the fire at night.

For a great campfire we always have a few things on hand. Giant Campfire marshmallows, these are really giant! They each weigh in at 1 oz, and make the perfect smore. Coupled with Jules Destrooper butter crisp cookies, and Hershey’s chocolate you are in for a real treat. I always have a fleece popover on hand to layer as the night gets cooler and the fire dies down. So cozy, I can hardly stand it!

What is Your Color?

Hands down I love Benjamin Moore paint. The color library is extensive, and I can always find exactly what I am looking for.

While roaming around the website I stumbled upon Color Stories: full-spectrum color collections. Originally it was the image that drew me in, I am such a judge a book by its cover person, but after exploring I found it to be a fantastic tool. A foolproof way to ensure that  the colors in your house are working together to tell your story. I love Shades of Grey, and Elemental Greens. What is your favorite color story?

Under the Weather

For the past week and a half I have been rather under the weather. It seems that there is some flu like illness circulating around the adult population across the country. I spent days in bed sleeping, and when I was finally able to venture downstairs I wanted to be as cozy, and relaxed as possible. Here are a few things that I like to keep around for when I am under the weather.

A New Room

After thinking, and talking about it for three years, I finally decided to go ahead and buy the Dash & Albert Rug that I have been lusting after. It took a bit of maneuvering, we did not move the bed out of the room to put the rug down, but it looks great. It has completely changed the feeling of the room, I get so excited every time I walk in. The room is almost finished, left on the list are bedside sconces, and a frame for the bed.

Do you know Fishs Eddy?

Fishs Eddy has been one of my favorite spots to shop for years. Even when my husband was just a boyfriend he would take deep sigh every time I made my way in knowing that he was in for eat least an hour of walking around. The end result would be heavy bags filled with breakable items that now somehow needed to make it through the rest of the day in New York, and back home to Baltimore. Over the years I have gotten better about leaving with only a few things that I love not everything that I love. This way it is always exciting to go back, always in search of the perfect kitchen item. Here are a few of the items that keep me going back.

Have you been to Fishs Eddy? What are your favorite items?

Stay on Track

I am off to New York on Saturday and have about 100 things to do today. Unfortunately all that I can think abut doing is painting the kitchen. Ever since I saw this image in a post on SF Girl By Sea last week I can’t get it out of my head. I know that I have to table the project for today, but hopefully will be able to revisit it soon. How often is to often to re-paint a room?

Better Late Than Never

My parents are in town visiting and my mom and I are side by side on the sofa busy on our pinterest accounts. I stumbled across a project that I did for ReadMade  last fall on a pinboard that I follow. It was really very exciting. I then realized that I did not have the image pined, and that I actually had never really shared the image or the full project here. So a year late, but better than never! Enjoy

For this project you will need…

  • basalm firm plug transplants
  • miscellaneous containers, I used canning jars
  • potting soil

1. Purchase saplings from a local garden center or nurseryman.com. They generally come anywhere from 5 to 14 inches, and take only a few days to ship.

2. Put some dirt into the bottom of your jar. The amount will depend on the depth of the container, at least an inch is a good base.

3. Place your sapling into the container and fill with dirt. Be sure that your roots are covered.

4. Water sparingly as there is no drainage.

5. When you are finished with your decorations donate the trees to a local school, city project, nursing home, or association of our choice.

This is such a fun project that I have done for many years. These are also fantastic hostess gifts, or projects for kiddos.
