Winter Windows

The holiday season has officially gone, and we are well on our way into 2012. I just realized I never shared the windows that we installed at Trohv for November, and December. They were a true collaboration of many on the Trohv team. Gary, the manager in Baltimore, came up with the concept. Katie laid out the text and got everything organized to go onto the windows. Finally I came in and painted the words. I think that they were some of our best windows yet!

Better Late Than Never

My parents are in town visiting and my mom and I are side by side on the sofa busy on our pinterest accounts. I stumbled across a project that I did for ReadMade  last fall on a pinboard that I follow. It was really very exciting. I then realized that I did not have the image pined, and that I actually had never really shared the image or the full project here. So a year late, but better than never! Enjoy

For this project you will need…

  • basalm firm plug transplants
  • miscellaneous containers, I used canning jars
  • potting soil

1. Purchase saplings from a local garden center or nurseryman.com. They generally come anywhere from 5 to 14 inches, and take only a few days to ship.

2. Put some dirt into the bottom of your jar. The amount will depend on the depth of the container, at least an inch is a good base.

3. Place your sapling into the container and fill with dirt. Be sure that your roots are covered.

4. Water sparingly as there is no drainage.

5. When you are finished with your decorations donate the trees to a local school, city project, nursing home, or association of our choice.

This is such a fun project that I have done for many years. These are also fantastic hostess gifts, or projects for kiddos.

It’s That Time Already

Last year we ordered holiday cards from Minted.com for the first time and I loved them. I am so excited to pick out what we are going to send this year. It seems like a daily I get an email from them, and today I happened to be at my computer instead of phone. So I took the time to click through and see what some of our options might be. Immediately I fell in love with this great design by j.bartin design from New York City. We will not be able to use this card, not enough going on with us this year!  But I think that it is great, and a nice way to tell people what your family has been up to in a fun, and  unique way.

Late Again

It is true I am late, or just barley on time to most things. It is something that I do not love, and try to fix, but it seems that it might just be the way it is. Like my mother, I consider myself a time optimist. Thanks mom! So it is no surprise that I realized that minute that today was Rosh Hashana, and that I should make a really nice meal for tonight. It looks like it is actually not going to happen, I offered to do a favor for a friend, but this is what I would cook, if I was going to cook.

Red Wine Braised Beef Brisket by Martha Stewart

I think that I might make this another night this week. Complete with kugel, roasted vegetables, and honey cake.

Sweet Treat

I love this DIY biscuit tin that Biscuiteers has come up with! The British company has done all the baking for you.  Complete with apron, colored icings, and decorative bits you are completely set for an afternoon of fun with the family.  These biscuits {cookies} also have holes in them ready for stinging above your mantle, or from a stocking.

Biscuiteers has so many great options that I am so excited to start gifting my best friend and her lovely little one as soon as she moves to England!

holidazzel

I returned early this week from a wonderful, and much needed visit with my parents. It was so nice to have a rest and enjoy some long walks with the family.

Upon returning it was back to work, and Wednesday I spent at Woodberry Kitchen with Gary installing Holidazzel 2010.  We planted miniature conifers in Weck jars, that Woodberry Kitchen has on hand for canning.  Jars were also filled with popcorn, star anise, cinnamon sticks, nuts, and candies to add some holiday cheer.  It was an amazing day, followed by an a fabulous dinner with my husband! I would highly recommend the charcuterie to start, chicken & biscuit, and CMP to finish!

These trees also make stunning hostess, or holiday gifts, and anything that is packaged in a Weck jar is fantabulous by association.

A Little Something

At this time of year that we start going to gatherings at peoples homes & need to bring along a little something to say thank you for friendship, tasty treats, and inspired libations. Here are three things that I will be brining to peoples houses this year.

Tatine Candle Set, Ambient Collection

Last year when I was at the New York Gift show, we found this amazing candle line. All hand mixed and poured in Chicago these soy/bee blend candles are stunning.  The Ambient collection is inspired by the dada art movement & are intended to provide a pure, clean, unobtrusive dining experience. In scents like crushed mint, ginger & balsamic it is hard to pick just one.

Lafco Gift Set

Lafco gift set

The Lafco shea butter soaps have a cult following & are really amazing.  There are 4 different gift assortments & they each give a sampling of five different scents.  Also, these are great for traveling, just small enough to bring along & you don’t have to worry about packaging up at the end of your stay.

Pennsylvania Dutch Eggnog

If I am in a pinch, or just want to bring a little added cheer I stop by the liquor store & pick up this very sophisticated libation… Ok so it might not be from the top of the shelf, but it is a crowd pleaser & friendly on you when there are events every night of the week!

Happy visiting!

Go ahead and look, it’s even ok to go ahead and get yourself a little something. kflickstudio.com

Judith & Julia

As with most people I saw the movie Julie & Julia last year and decided that I too wanted to cook from Julia’s cookbook. My lovely husband was kind enough to give me Mastering the Art of French Cooking for the holiday’s this year. I think that it was 40% a gift for me, and 60% a gift for himself… I thought that I would try the Beef Bourguignon recipe on New Year’s Day. A hearty dish that I could put on and have mid afternoon. As it turns out we were out and about on New Year’s Day and I never got around to making it. I did make it sometime over the next week and it was scrum-diddly-umcious. One of the serving suggestions is over potatoes, which I hate, or buttered egg noodles, which is a bit to German for my taste. We had some good rustic bread which I toasted. I placed half of the slice in the bottom of the bowl to absorb broth, and the other half I just placed along side to enjoy whenever. We both really liked this serving option as the stew was really heavy enough on its own and did not need a full helping of anything else along with it.

On a side note, I have been taking a lot of pictures recently with my iphone. Mainly because that is what is always with me, and it is really quick and easy to upload them to my computer. I really like the images that are produced, and wanted to mention that all of the photos on the blog recently are iphone photos.
