on the road again

It’s Monday again and I am on the road for work. I don’t think that I will be making any more appearances here this week, but you never know! Hopefully I will have some good finds to share. You can see a small bit from a great truck that I found last year in photo of my delicious breakfast bellow. This is one of my favorite morning starters. Greek yogurt, fresh berries, and some kind of crunchy cereal. Simple, healthy, and fast. What more could a gal want?

Have a great week if I do not make it back!

good old southern food

I spent the past few days in North Carolina on a buying trip with work. While on these trips we always try and find some good eats, sometime it is easy, and sometimes it is not. This trip proved to be a bit more of a challenge. In the end we did end up with some good eats, and southern staples.

Day One

A completely new eatery to me, Biscuitville is just as it says. They serve biscuits with different items on them and that is about it. Open from 5am to 2pm, it is really for the early birds. We ate here twice, really there were not a lot of options. My highlight was the warm syrup dispenser right next to the iced teas at the beverage counter.

Day Two

The Waffle House, yet another new experience for me. For years I have heard friends from the south speak fondly of the Waffle House and how wonderful it is. I am not quite sure where they were as opposed to where I was. Let’s just say that I can say that I have been there and never need to go back. In all reality it was fine, just not something that I need to repeat.

Day Three

Again, Biscuitville… During this trip I noticed that there are no vegetables on the menu. It was then pointed out to me that on the club sandwich lies a lonely tomato, and small bit of lettuce. Other than that, none, no where, nothing. How is this possible?

Day Four

On the way home we stopped in Greensboro, North Carolina for some Barbecue. I tried some chicken, and chopped pork with sides of coleslaw, and baked beans. The highlights were the hush puppies, and the iced tea. Not only was it the best tea that I had while I was traveling but it was served with crushed ice, could it be any better?

Now that I am home I am eating as many salads and vegetables as a person can in a day.

cast iron pizza

Months ago our friend Ben introduced us to skillet pizzas. They are now one of our favorite things to eat, and lucky for me, one of my husbands favorite things to cook. Ideally we make our own pizza dough which is really easy, but does take a bit of planing which we are not always the best at. So on nights when we have not thought ahead we pick up some fresh dough from the grocery and go to town.

By cooking the pizza in a hot cast iron skillet you are able to create the great crust, taste, and texture of a wood fired dough. Because these pizzas are small if you are serving more than two it is best if you can have two skillets in rotation.

To makes these tasty pies at home you will need a cast iron skillet, stovetop, and broiler. It is as easy as one – two – three.

- one -

heat the cast iron skillet over high heat, and put a bit of cornmeal on the bottom of the pan

- two -

place your dough in the skillet and add you toppings, cook over high heat until the bottom is crisp

- three -

slip the pan into the broiler, preheated of course, until the topping are cooked to your liking

Enjoy!

summertime sipper

Today I thought that I would share the first of a series of post that Katie and I worked on for the Trohv blog. A few weekends ago we put together an impromptu brunch and are sharing snippets over the next few weeks. We started, of course, with the cocktail. Full of fresh berries, and flavors of spring this is the perfect spring spritzer. I also love this cocktail because it is easily made without alcohol so no one has to miss out. For the recipe and full post hop on over to the Trohv blog. Enjoy!!

yum yum

Every Sunday, for almost a year now, we have been getting together with some of our closest friends for Sunday Supper. It is a really nice way to catch up after a busy week. We try to rotate from house to house, and with a three week rotation it is rather easy to keep up with.

Last night Mr. Awesome and I hosted and decided to go with the all American classic, Sloppy Joes. None of us grew up eating these but are all familiar with the sandwich in a can, Manwhich. Fortunately for everyone we did not pop open a can but made these gems from scratch. They are really a sinch to make, and a great way to get vegetable into kiddos.

old fashioned

So finally on Sunday, after months of waiting, Mad Men premiered for it’s fifth season. Did you watch? We did. What did you think? I am still digesting everything, and think that I might go back and re-watch it but in general I’m excited for the season. Monday’s Fresh Air was completely dedicated to Matthew Weiner, the creator of Man Men. The show gave some insight into the plot and character choices that were made. If you have not already heard it you might want to take a listen.

In honor of the show my husband, sometimes we call him Mr. Awesome, made Old Fashioned cocktails for all of us. They were perfect!

Mr. Awesome’s Old Fashioned

orange | maraschino cherries | bourbon  | water

ice |lemon | sugar cubes | orange bitters

place one sugar cube  in a rocks glass

+ add +

3 dashes of orange bitters  – 1 teaspoon maraschino cherry juice   1 teaspoon water

use your muddler and crush up the sugar cube until it is dissolved

+ add +

a section of the orange & one cherry – muddle these with the sugar mixture

+ add +

2.5oz bourbon & continue to muddle

+ add +

 ice to fill the glass

cut a tick piece of lemon rind – twist it to release the oils and rim the glass  - drop it into the cocktail

a good Old Fashioned should take no less than 3 minutes to make

These are one of my favorite drinks. I highly suggest you try one out if you are not already a fan. Cheers!

warm days + cool nights

One of my favorite parts of the spring are the warm days and cool nights. There is nothing better than feeling warm and sun sunkissed during the day and snuggling up with a great blanket by the fire at night.

For a great campfire we always have a few things on hand. Giant Campfire marshmallows, these are really giant! They each weigh in at 1 oz, and make the perfect smore. Coupled with Jules Destrooper butter crisp cookies, and Hershey’s chocolate you are in for a real treat. I always have a fleece popover on hand to layer as the night gets cooler and the fire dies down. So cozy, I can hardly stand it!

breakfast sandwich

{photo via A Communal Table}

Oh how I wish that I was eating this right now. Sadly I am out of quick breakfast food, and am in the mood for something with great depth of flavor, texture, and perhaps some cured meat. I think a bacon, lettuce, and tomato french toast would do the treat. Perhaps this weekend! Pop on over here for the recipe.

Blacksauce Kitchen Brunch

If you want to do one thing for yourself each month you should go to the brunch at the Creative Alliance that Blacksauce Kitchen puts on.

Mr. Flick and I went for the first time a few weeks ago and ordered almost the entire menu. Next time we plan on bringing a larger crowd so there are more plates to share around.

fresh, hot fluffy biscuit | apricot preserves

grit fritters | local micro greens | roasted tomoatoes

sweet potato beignets with a citrus drizzle

pan fried pork chop | micro greens | corn bread pudding | vanilla and pear parfait

I also need to mention that Mr. Flick got ox tail with fried kale, and polenta. I did not get a good photo of the dish because he was to anxious to dig in. Oh and smoked Bloody Mary’s to die for!

You can find Blacksauce Kitchen at the 32nd Street Farmer’s Market in Baltimore every Saturday. They serve up glorious biscuit sandwiches, generally a meat and vegetarian option. In the winter there is also a gravy option ranging from mushroom, to smoked shrimp.

Do you have a favorite Saturday morning spot?

Tasty Treats

This week I had the pleasure of authoring my first post on Trohv’s new blog. I did a little feature on my new favorite dessert cookbook, The Treats Truck, by  Kim Ima. Head on over and take a look, the book is also available in both stores, and online.
