holidazzel

I returned early this week from a wonderful, and much needed visit with my parents. It was so nice to have a rest and enjoy some long walks with the family.

Upon returning it was back to work, and Wednesday I spent at Woodberry Kitchen with Gary installing Holidazzel 2010.  We planted miniature conifers in Weck jars, that Woodberry Kitchen has on hand for canning.  Jars were also filled with popcorn, star anise, cinnamon sticks, nuts, and candies to add some holiday cheer.  It was an amazing day, followed by an a fabulous dinner with my husband! I would highly recommend the charcuterie to start, chicken & biscuit, and CMP to finish!

These trees also make stunning hostess, or holiday gifts, and anything that is packaged in a Weck jar is fantabulous by association.

A Little Something

At this time of year that we start going to gatherings at peoples homes & need to bring along a little something to say thank you for friendship, tasty treats, and inspired libations. Here are three things that I will be brining to peoples houses this year.

Tatine Candle Set, Ambient Collection

Last year when I was at the New York Gift show, we found this amazing candle line. All hand mixed and poured in Chicago these soy/bee blend candles are stunning.  The Ambient collection is inspired by the dada art movement & are intended to provide a pure, clean, unobtrusive dining experience. In scents like crushed mint, ginger & balsamic it is hard to pick just one.

Lafco Gift Set

Lafco gift set

The Lafco shea butter soaps have a cult following & are really amazing.  There are 4 different gift assortments & they each give a sampling of five different scents.  Also, these are great for traveling, just small enough to bring along & you don’t have to worry about packaging up at the end of your stay.

Pennsylvania Dutch Eggnog

If I am in a pinch, or just want to bring a little added cheer I stop by the liquor store & pick up this very sophisticated libation… Ok so it might not be from the top of the shelf, but it is a crowd pleaser & friendly on you when there are events every night of the week!

Happy visiting!

Grab and go…

One of my newest obsessions when it comes to entertaining is disposable silverware. Less clean up, and my husband and I don’t have to re-visit the fights we had when we were registering over how many place settings we need. {please let the record state that I was correct}

I am obviously not the first, and I am sure will not the be last to package disposable wooden utensils in a little bag, but none the less I have done it! They are currently for sale at Red Tree for $2.95.

Here they come!

I’m not sure if anyone else is experiencing this, but it seems like everyone is pregnant right now. I know about 15 people who are expecting between this week and late December. It seemed like every week I was getting exciting news from another friend. I can’t wait to start meeting all the little ones, and see my friends families grow.

Last week I was lucky enough to travel down to Miami and co-host my first babyshower of this baby boom! The shower was for my best friend Alexis who is due in just a few weeks. She has spent the past 8 months preparing her house, and researching everything that she might ever need to know. Fortunately she has been sharing some of this knowledge on her amazing blog.

We had an early afternoon brunch shower with an intimate group and it was such a fun and relaxing event. Here are a few shots of the food… I forgot to take some of the people!

Big Boy Dinner

So my husband turned 30 and jumped out of a plane. In honor of being such a big boy I thought that it would be super cute to do a candy themed birthday dinner. It turned out to be a great way to inexpensively add color to the table and send everyone home with a little something.

The table was set with some great linen homespun, I am obsessed with this and can’t seem to pass it by when I see it nicely priced while antiquing. It provided a neutral background for all the colors and food. The plastic army men were a great find a Target. Perfect for the color story and the previous day’s events! It took the man a bit to figure it out, but his little brother, who is 7, got it right away.

I used a combination on vintage ball jars, I have them on hand from our wedding, another obsession, and new mason jars. (I love to have these on hand to give gifts, and store food. We are trying to move away from storing in plastic and these are a great and more economical alternative) The flowers were a steal at Wegmans. My first choice would normally not have been roses but the price was right and they played nicely into my color story.
I love it when I arrive at a party and find a little something at my place. But let’s face it that really never happens, at least not outside of my dreams. So in honor of this big occasion I decided to go the extra step and make a little goody bag for every guest. Inside they found childhood favorites like candy necklaces, dot candy, lemon heads, and bubble gum. I printed a black and white picture of the birthday boy on packaging labels and tied them to each bag. It was a nice touch that everyone really enjoyed.
We had a great night with friends and family, and the man has enjoyed eating the left overs since his big day.

Quick Brunch

Last weekend we had a small dinner party and two of our guest were in from out of town. The next morning was Easter and we were all off to family functions in the early afternoon. I rose early and made a quick brunch, well breakfast, that was filling and exceptionally easy. The menu was simple, coffee, tea, orange juice, rosemary wrapped bacon, and three cheese frittata. Both recipes were from Donna Hay. If you are not familiar with her, you should be. She is a fantastic food editor and cookbook author from Australia. Her recipes are simple, easy to follow, and fresh. I absolutely adore her and these recipes are small reason why.

{Donna Hay, Three Cheese Frittata}

three cheese fritatta
  • 8 eggs
  • ¾ cup (185ml) milk
  • sea salt and cracked black pepper
  • 30g butter
  • ¼ cup shredded basil leaves
  • 1¼ cups (250g) ricotta, drained
  • 1 cup (120g) grated aged chedder
  • ½ cup (60g) grated Gruyère
  • buttered toast, to serve

Heat a non-stick frying pan with an ovenproof handle over medium heat. Whisk together the eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Place the butter in the pan and melt. Pour in the egg mixture and sprinkle over the basil, ricotta, cheddar and Gruyère. Cook for 3–4 minutes or until the frittata is starting to set around the edges. Place the pan under a preheated hot grill (broiler) and cook for 8–10 minutes or until the frittata is set. Serve warm or cold, cut into wedges. Serves 4.

{Donna Hay, Crispy Bacon and Rosemary Ties}

crispy bacon and rosemary ties

  • 8 rashers smoked bacon, rind removed
  • 8 sprigs rosemary

Preheat oven to 180°C (355°F). Wrap each bacon rasher around a sprig of rosemary and place in a baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes or until the bacon is crisp. Serves 4.

Happy eating!
