it’s my favorite … rifle paper co

Like many of you out there I love Rifle Paper Co. and am so excited to share some of the new designs for 2013. The new sticker sheets, notebooks, and 2014 calendars are some of my favorites. As always the cards are colorful and a joy to choose from, I can hardly stand the make a wish card, I might need to frame it for the nursery. Also new for 2013 are the tin recipe boxes. At $34 they make a great gift. I like to add a few of my favorite recipes to the box before gifting it.

belle and union & 1 canoe 2

Today I have some great new goods and some old favorites from Belle and Union and 1 canoe 2 to share with you. I might need to order all of them!

belle and union

This was Bell and Unions’s second year at The National Stationery Show. I literally stopped in my tracks when I came across the booth last year. Run in Savannah, Georgia by husband and wife duo Meg and Josh I can’t get enough of this press. With southern charm, sweet illustrations, and a great eye for styling Meg has done a wonderful job with the line. From cards to wrap to dish towels it is impossible not to fall in love.

1 canoe 2

Friends Carrie and Beth have been drawing and daydreaming together since childhood. Today they are running the amazing 1 canoe 2 in Columbia, Missouri. They have added Karen as the third to their circle and each year manage to blow me away with their illustrations and new product designs. This year there are new calendars ranging from desk to wall to super-sized works of art. Tons of new designs and so many great cards.

wild ink press & printerette press

The National Stationery Show is wrapping up today in New York City. While I was not able to make the show this year, I did get some sneak peaks from some of my favorite stationers to share with all of you. There are so many amazing studios, I wish that I could share them all, but alas I cannot and have chosen just a handful to share.

Today I am sharing some of my favorites from Wild Ink Press and Printerette Press.

wild ink press

Husband and wife Matt and Rebekah Tennis balance three pre-school aged children, rice farming, and this fabulous press in Northern California. From concept and design to printing this duo does it all. I love the wit and detail that goes into every card.

printerette press

Catherine Polacek trained as a clothing designer, but in 2009 decided to make a switch and opened Printerette Press. The boutique design and letterpress studio based in Minneapolis, Minnesota recently moved into an amazing new studio. I love the hand done quality that Catherine does so well. It is especially apparent in her wedding work.

in my bag … the pool

Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner and everyone will be heading to the nearest pool, beach or lake for some summertime fun. These are the essentials that make it into my bag every summer. Good reading… sometimes I bring a book but most of the time it’s magazines. Mineral based sunscreen… have you been reading all the terrible things about the chemicals in sunscreen recently? I turned to Kiehl’s and have not been disappointed. Hydration… the night before we head out I fill the largest water bottle I have, this one is a whopping 48oz, half full with water and some sliced lemons, and place it in the freezer. The next day I top it off with water and have a nice cool drink for most of the day. Footwear… I love a good flip-flop and for me these days that is anything with an arch support like these ladies from rainbow. A soft landing… a good towel is worth its weight in gold. These are personalized so I never have to worry about using someone else’s towel, not my thing. Sun Shade… I must have a good floppy hat, there is only so much sun that a lady can have on her face. Lip Balm… I apply this religiously year round, but if I am skiing or sitting by the water I make sure that I have sun protection in it as well. I can’t wait until next weekend! So what do you keep in your summer bag?

cook it … bean salad

Bean salad is one of my favorite things to make as a simple lunch, or to bring to a pot luck. Simple, tasty, and healthy it is an overall hit. You can serve it as a side, or as a dip that you can use chips to scoop it up with.

bean salad ingredients

bean salad

1 can pinto beans

1 can black eyed peas

1/2 yellow pepper finely chopped

1/2 orange pepper finely chopped

1/2 medium white onion finely chopped

3 to 4 cloves garlic minced

italian dressing or homemade vinaigrette

optional ingredients…

1/2 jalapeño minced

small handful cilantro roughly chopped

bean salad extras

Drain and rinse the beans, place them in a bowl. Add the chopped peppers, onions, garlic, jalapeño and cilantro if using. Gently stir to mix. Add in italian dressing, or homemade vinaigrette to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours. Serve with your main dish as a side, or with a sturdy chip for scooping.

The recipe above is for a very small batch and is meant to be increased as needed. If I am making the bean salad to take to a pot luck I usually double it. Also, if I am not making anything else that calls for bell peppers or an onion I will chop the whole thing and toss it in. The above recipe is just a base, add and subtract as you like.

Happy cooking!

it’s my favorite … studio sarah

Some of you might remember my blog post last year about Brown Paper, a boutique card shop that was based out of London. Over the past year the shop underwent some changes and has been re-envisioned as Studio Sarah.  Created by Sarah Silver, half of the original Brown Paper, she has had a lifelong love of fine stationery and the handwritten note. One of the things that draws me to Sarah’s work is her eye that “…has always been drawn to delicate forms and beautiful yet understated objects.” I can’t seem to choose my favorite from her new work. The simplistic elegance of the collection makes any piece a classic.

Studio Sarah cards

Along with cards I also compulsively collect notebooks. I would love to add either one of these to my collection.
